Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Read below to see if a tummy tuck is for you. Loose, hanging skin should not get in the way of positive achievements such as losing a large amount of weight or having a child. Unfortunately, this is a common problem and is not easily resolved in the kitchen or the gym. Our Midsota plastic surgeons are expertly trained in performing tummy tuck surgery to effectively flatten the midsection for a slimmer shape and firm contours.

Is a Tummy Tuck for Me?
The tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is an extremely popular procedure among mothers seeking to regain their pre-pregnancy midsection, as well as men and women who have lost a considerable amount of weight. When the abdomen is stretched–whether by weight gain or pregnancy–skin will often lose elasticity, abdominal muscles loosen and are stretched, and unwanted fullness is left behind. These issues cannot always be fully repaired with diet and exercise alone and will often require special body contouring procedures, such as the tummy tuck.
A tummy tuck can also be effective for those experiencing loose or sagging abdominal skin as a result of the natural aging process.
Though a tummy tuck is not intended for the removal of excess fat from other areas, your Midsota plastic surgeon can perform your procedure in combination with liposuction of the abdomen or hips . Combining these two surgeries can help to provide you with more appealing contours and more natural-looking results.
What are the Benefits of a Tummy Tuck?
Patients who undergo a tummy tuck may experience several benefits, such as:
- Removal of loose, excess abdominal skin
- Repositioning of displaced, spread abdominal muscles
- Restoration of pre-baby body
- Removal of excess fat at the abdomen
How is a Tummy Tuck Performed?
The details of your tummy tuck procedure will be discussed at length during your consultation with your Midsota plastic surgeon.
Your tummy tuck will be performed under general anesthesia. A gently curving horizontal incision will be made several inches below your belly button, extending from near one hipbone to the other. A second incision around the belly button is typically necessary to allow skin not removed to be redraped across the abdomen. Once the incision is made, your doctor will work to repair the underlying abdominal muscles to provide a firmer, stronger foundation. The skin is then redraped over your abdomen, and any excess is removed in order to allow for a natural-looking shape. A drain may be placed. Your incisions are closed. Excess fat can be removed from other areas using liposuction if that is chosen in addition to abdominoplasty. Dressings and an abdominal binder which gently supports you are applied.
How Long Does a Tummy Tuck Take?
Your tummy tuck at Midsota Plastic Surgeons will take about two to three hours to complete. This will vary depending on the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed.
How Long is the Recovery from a Tummy Tuck?
You will need to wear a compression garment, such as your abdominal binder or a shapewear garment of your choosing for the first six weeks of recovery, but most people choose to wear it longer for comfort. This will help to minimize swelling and will assist with proper healing of the skin to your body’s new contours. Most of the swelling should diminish within 6-8 weeks (*), and your scar will continue to fade over time. While there will be some light scarring, patients often prefer this to the excess skin. Many people return to work with restrictions about 2 weeks after surgery and can exercise within the second month.
When Will I Notice My Tummy Tuck Results?
The results of your tummy tuck will be noticeable immediately after your surgery. However, it will take 6-8 weeks for most of the post-surgical swelling to go down. Women and men who undergo a tummy tuck are often thrilled with their results and can’t wait to try on new clothes.
How Long Will my Tummy Tuck Results Last?
The results of your tummy tuck can be maintained with ongoing diet and exercise. Becoming pregnant after a tummy tuck, however, can undo some of your results. Most women don’t have a tummy tuck until after having their last child.
