Our Medical Missions
Mission to Guatemala
Midsota Plastic Surgeons provides surgical care to the poor and indigenous peoples of Guatemala. Partnering with Helps International, a Texas-based non-profit, Midsota has facilitated over 70 multidisciplinary medical teams of up to 100 volunteers each.
Helps International sent its first surgical and medical team in 1988, led by Dr. Paul Schultz and Dr. Paul Heath. Our physicians and staff have been key supporters of Helps, organizing a complex array of medical supplies and surgical equipment necessary for this type of care. Dr. Paul Schultz continues to lead teams yearly to Guatemala to help the poor in greatest need.
Dr. Paul Schultz, Medical Director of Helps International, commenting on the work, said that “The volunteers enthusiastically return year after year, despite the conditions, for the opportunity to give of their skills and resources. The volunteers find this experience to be life-changing, even as they are changing the lives of their patients.”
One such life was Angel, a six-year-old boy who came to the Helps clinic in Puerto Barrios with webbed hands and a cleft palate. Dr. Schultz began the delicate reconstruction process, spanning three medical teams, with repair of both hands and closure of his palate. Angel became both a joy and an inspiration to the volunteers, a face they will not soon, if ever, forget. His story speaks powerfully to the successful results that Helps teams have been able to bring about in Guatemala.
For over 25 years, Helps International, in partnership with Midsota Plastic Surgeons and multiple other medical teams from across the country, have served nearly 250,000 clinic patients and performed over 18,000 surgical procedures. In 2015, Midsota surgeons and staff assisted teams to San Cristobal and Huehuetenango, Guatemala, serving over 1400 in clinic and 220 surgical patients.
