Carpal Tunnel Release
Hand Therapy in St. Cloud
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that causes pain and discomfort, numbness, tingling, or weakness of the hands. This often makes it difficult to perform ordinary tasks such as driving, writing, or even brushing your teeth. With a Carpal Tunnel Release at the Midsota Hand Center, we can restore comfortable use of your hands to get you back to doing the important things in life, pain-free.

Is Carpal Tunnel Release for me?
CTS occurs when constant pressure from swelling is placed on the median nerve, which is responsible for movement and sensation in your thumb and fingers (aside from the pinky). This swelling can be the result of several factors, including arthritis, diabetes, pregnancy, and repeated hand movements such as typing. Those who suffer from CTS often have difficulties using their hands due to pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness in the hands (which can sometimes extend up to the elbow).
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be treated by a hand surgery professional at our Midsota Hand Center. Our Midsota surgeons are specially trained in restoring use of the hands with a Carpal Tunnel Release.
What are the benefits of Carpal Tunnel Release surgery?
Treatment for CTS with one of our trained surgeons can often restore significant use of your hands and dramatically reduce the pain or discomfort you have been experiencing.
How is Carpal Tunnel Release surgery performed?
Your procedure will be performed by one of our experienced Midsota hand surgeons while you are under local anesthesia. The details will be covered at length during your pre-surgery consultation.
During your CTS surgery, an incision will be made at the bottom of the palm of your hand. Your surgeon will then carefully cut the underlying transverse carpal ligament to release any pressure on the median nerve. The created gap between the cut ligament will heal on its own over time.
How long does Carpal Tunnel Release surgery take?
Your CTS procedure should be fairly quick, and you are safe to return home under the care of a loved one that same day. Most CTS surgeries are completed in about one hour.
How long will it take to notice the improvements to my hand?
Once your CTS surgery is complete, your hand will need to be wrapped. In approximately two weeks, your stitches will be removed. Some patients notice an immediate improvement in the pain and numbness in their hands, but it may take several months for symptoms to fully fade. It is important to refrain from excessive use of your hands for the first three months following your CTS procedure.
If surgery was performed on your dominant hand, it may take some time before you are able to return to work. Returning to a job that involves typing may also require a two-month recuperation period. Physical therapy may help speed up your recovery time to get you back to work faster.
The majority of patients experience fewer or no symptoms of their Carpal Tunnel Syndrome after surgery. This treatment has proven extremely safe and effective for helping men and women return to doing the things they love by giving them back the use of their most important tools.
